Research abstract

The development of a compact, accurate and reliable laser beam discrimination device is proposed. The concept is based on a novel and improved Electron-Trapping (ET) material developed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), capable of discriminating between NIR, Far-IR, and UV laser sources used for the tracking and ranging of moving objects in the field. This ET phosphor emits visible radiation when stimulated by such laser sources. The time response, spectral discrimination and sensitivity of the NSWC's phosphor make it a very attractive candidate for the proposed concept. A small size, compact and lightweight device can be achieved by using state-of-the-art miniature electronic optical components. The proposed Phase I effort includes the development of the optimum ET material for the application, and the development of a basic prototype device to demonstrate the functional capabilities of the concept.
