Research abstract

The objective of this program is to develop a new algorithm which can be used as a reliable and efficient tool in the analysis of such aspects of interaction of electromagnetic radiation with biological tissue as: (a) Wideband pulse propagation in dispersive media (b) Medium response to the pulse (c) Localization of energy deposited in the medium. The proposed algorithm will solve Maxwell's equations in the combined surface/volumetric integral form in the frequency domain. Solutions for pulsed radiation will be constructed in terms of suitably chosen sets of Fourier components. The underlying algorithm formulation will employ discretization and matrix compression techniques assuring accurate modeling of inhomogeneous, irregularly shaped dispersive media, and a significant reduction of memory and execution time requirements with respect to conventional method of moments and partial differential equation solvers. These features are of crucial importance in applications involving electrically large, 3-dimensional volumetric scatterers with frequency dependent dielectric material properties.
