Research abstract

"The team of Artis, LLC, Noesis, Inc. and Brandeis University will address four objectives in Phase I. First, we will develop a system, the Virtual Motion Induction System (VMIS), that couples the sensed motion in the environment to a simulatedenvironment. The purpose of VMIS is to reduce the onset and severity of motion side effects. Second, we will test VMIS on multiple laboratory motion platforms to determine its capabilities. Third, we will design and conduct a brief experiment involvinghuman subjects whose main objective will be to guide the development of goals for our Phase II plan. Fourth, we will demonstrate VMIS on a watercraft. This research will lead to a better understanding of the relationship between visual-somaticmultisensory perception and motion side effects. Potential military applications include motion sickness reduction on military ships, small vessels, armored and amphibious vehicles such as the Marine Corps AAAV and aircraft. Commercial applicationsinclude motion sickness reduction on commercial flights, cruise ships, pleasure and work boats and in motion-platform video systems such as are being installed in many up-scale minivans and sport utility vehicles."
