Research abstract

Comprehensive nutrient calculations and food management in research settings require adifferent set of functions than supplied by the general software created for nutritionists, dietitians, andhome use. Nutrition researchers need to be able to calculate diets which will provide specified nutrientsto specified and variable levels of accuracy. The solution of this class of problem requires linearprogramming techniques that meet nutritional researcher's needs and are not available with existingprograms. Phase I will develop a detailed project specification and requirements document for nutrientcalculation and food management software called ProNutra for use by nutrition researchers with thePROPHET II software system. This specification will provide the proper information for the developmentof a prototype in Phase II. In preparing this specification, it is also an objective of Phase I to determineand realize the desired behavior of this system as described by the "user" community of nutritionresearchers. In Phase II, a prototype software system of ProNutra with the attributes defined in PhaseI will be developed.
