Research abstract

A future multi-TeV collider, with an energy reach beyond present or planned electron-positron colliders, will require accelerator structures that can sustain acceleration gradients in the range of 150 MeV/m. To satisfy this requirement, this project will develop a two-channel dielectric wake field accelerator. In Phase I, a coaxial structure, consisting of two dielectric pipes surrounded by a conductor, will be analyzed in order to design a wake field accelerator. The wake field accelerator will be driven along its outer channel by an annular charge bunch whose wake fields accelerate a test charge bunch moving along its inner channel. This configuration can provide a high transformer ratio and favorable stability. In an mm-scale version, accelerator gradients of several 100 MeV/m can be induced by a few-nC drive bunch. The new wake field accelerator will be tested in Phase IICommercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: Development of structures that can sustain a high accelerating gradient without an undue frequency of breakdown should hasten the day when a multi-TeV collider will be built.
