Research abstract

72423S03-I Current gamma cameras for use in small animal imaging do not offer the combination of spatial resolution and energy resolution required. Spatial resolutions less than 1mm and energy resolution less than 6% at 140keV are required for dual isotope single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies in vivo. Although much work has been done with the material CZT, these performance goals have not been achieved. This project will construct detector modules, based on CZT, offering 0.8 - 1.0 mm spatial resolution and less than 6% energy resolution, with a threshold less than 20keV. Phase I will focus on the design of the electrode structure. Additionally, the mounting substrates and hardware necessary to build a prototype will be designed and fabricated. These will be incorporated into a prototype, which will allow initial measurements to validate the performance goals. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The gamma camera should meet a new and increasing demand for higher resolution, quantitative, and functional micro-imaging in the laboratory setting. Applications include imaging the central nervous system of non-human primates, in order to further knowledge about functional processes at the micro-level and to develop diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceuticals; and imaging other animals for the development of cancer-seeking radiopharmaceuticals for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
