Research abstract

FOR SURFACES AT HIGH TEMPERATURE, THE EMITTED SPECTRUM OF ELECTRO-MAGNETIC RADIATION IS THE MOST CONVENIENT PROBE OF TEMPERATURE, IF THE SPECTRAL EMITTANCE OF THE SAMPLE IS KNOWN. THIS PROPOSAL SUGGESTS THE APPLICATION OF A NOVEL, NON-INTRUSIVE SURFACE TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUE FOR THE IN-SITU DETERMINATION OF BOTH TEMPERATURE AND EMISSIVITY. THE TECHNIQUE EMPLOYS SMALL LOCAL MODULATION OF THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SURFACE TO BE MEASURED AND DETECTION OF THE MODULATED SURFACE RADIATION. THE MODULATION RADIATION EXCLUDES RADIATION REFLECTED FROM OTHERPARTS OF THE EQUIPMENT, AND THE SPECTRAL SHAPE OF THE INTENSITY OF THIS MODULATED RADIATION IS A FUNCTION OF THE SURFACE TEMPERATURE. THE OBJECTIVE OF PHASE I IS TO DEMONSTRATE THE TECHNIQUE AT MODERATELY ELEVATED TEMPERATURES UP TO 1700 K. IN PHASE II, AN INSTRUMENT WILL BE CONSTRUCTED BASED ON THE PHASE I RESULTS. THE PHASE II PROGRAM WOULD RESULT IN AN INTEGRATED, AUTOMATED, RESEARCH PROTOTYPE INSTRUMENT THAT ALLOWS FOR EASE OF MANEUVERABILITYAND IN-SITU TARGET SELECTION.
