Research abstract

To enhance the operation of DoE accelerator facilities, radio frequency (RF) sources will be required to power accelerators operating at approximately 350 MHz, providing 200 kW CW for each accelerator cavity. To achieve this goal, this project will investigate a multiple beam Inductive Output Tube (IOT). In particular, fundamental mode and higher order mode IOTs will be investigated for potential accelerator applications. Phase I will explore both single beam and multiple beam devices. The use of multiple beams offers the advantage of reduced operating voltage by propagating several beams down individual beam tunnels. In turn, lower beam voltage would allow a significant reduction in the power supply requirements and a reduced opportunity for electrical breakdown and x-ray generation. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: A multiple beam IOT at this frequency should find use in many high RF power applications. The high efficiency would significantly reduce the cost of these systems. The device would be simpler, more efficient, and less expensive then current devices.
