Research abstract

40138 MDS Company A need exists for high efficiency, high peak power, narrow band, RF amplifiers for application in large electron/positron linear colliders. To meet this need, a 300 MW, 3 GHz relativistic klystron amplifier, capable of operating with a pulse width of 3.0 microseconds at a pulse rate frequency of 50 Hz, will be developed. Previously, the major components of this klystron were analyzed, designed, and simulated. Because more than 1000 of these klystrons will be required for the next linear collider, the manufacturing time and cost of these amplifiers must be reduced. This project will generate a conservative, simplistic mechanical design that will emphasize high thermal capacity long life and robust construction. Phase I will complete the mechanical design of individual components, subassemblies, and final assembly with a detailed cost analysis. Phase II will complete the development and testing of the high power klystron. Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: Anticipated results are the successful development of a 300 MW S-band klystron for large linear colliders. The successful integration of the klystron with a power supply - modulator will result in a significant reduction in the cost of high RF accelerators, in particular for medical applications.
