Research abstract

This project will demonstrate novel SiC avalanche photodiodes (APD) to replace photomultiplier tubes for gamma detection, a technology used in nuclear physics experiments. These avalanche photodiodes will enhance the sensitivity, resolution, and robustness of gamma detection at a reduced cost. The approach is based on an innovative process for obtaining the starting SiC material. In Phase I, the APDs will be designed to provide high gain, low dark current, and high quantum efficiency at wavelengths used by existing scintillators. In Phase II, these novel APDs will be optimized and readied for commercialization. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: In addition to nuclear physics applications, the new APDs should find applications in oil well drilling, radiation detection, and biodetection. These detectors should improve the nation¿s ability to detect certain types of radiation important for energy and security applications.
