Research abstract
Lightel invented a network architecture that maps the computing model consisting of processes, tasks, threads, sockets and demons with the seven-layer communication protocol model and the wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) fiber based transport model. These designs create the traffic performance, connection characteristics and the network intelligence required to enable application layer Quality of Service (QoS) and convergence in multi service Internets to provide consistently high level of service forvoice, data and real time video/television services.Under our Phase I program we conducted extensive technology, product, and feasibility research and came to the conclusion that these products can be designed as envisioned. In particular Phase I proved that there are components available today with therequired power, space, electrical and optical characteristics that can packaged on PCI form factor card to create terabit range networks with QoS and convergence. This proposed Phase 2 under the Fast Track Program is to design and develop the products envisioned at the earliest so that Lightel can provide the very first end-to-end WDM network solutions, beginning with the Web server farms for the next generationnetworks and then extending the solution to LANs and WANs. To create such end to end network solutions we propose to design and develop a Network Interface Card (also called a Host Adapter Board), a Bridge or Transit Card to inter operate with othertechnologies like Fiber Channel and Gigabit Ethernet, and a Switch product to extend networking solutions to LANs and WANs.
