Research abstract

DEPLETION OF NATURAL FISHERIES AND INCREASED DEMAND HAS MADE ABALONE AQUCULTURE FEASIBLE. BECAUSE ABALONE AQUACULTURE IS A RELATIVELY NEW INDUSTRY, EFFECTIVE METHODS FOR DOMESTICATION HAVE YET TO BE DEVELOPED. BREEDING FOR QUANTITATIVE TRAITS--PARTICULARLY GROWTH--REQUIRE TIME FRAMES WHICH CANNOT MEET CURRENT, MUCH LESS FUTURE, DEMANDS. CLASSIC BREEDING PROCEDURES CAN, HOWEVER, BE AUGMENTED BY PLOIDY MANIPULATION WITH TECHNIQUES WHICH HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED IN FINFISH AND, TO SOME DEGREE, IN SHELLFISH.
