Research abstract

The Filtered LIDAR Velocimeter (FLV) concept was shown in the Phase I study to meet the Navy's requirements for detecting sub-surface ocean currents with velocities of 1-10 knots, at depths between 40 and 150 feet, and obtained from a helicopter hovering at an altitude of 500 feet. This 24month Phase II base program extends the development of the FLV concept through an experimental evaluation stage to demonstrate the concept feasibility. The principal technical objectives are (a) to develop atransportable FLV prototype system suitable for ground-based demonstrations at a field site and (b) to carry out experimental FLV performance evaluations in a calibrated fluid-flow facility that reproduces the specified velocity range and spatialgradients. The resulting prototype system will establish the configurations for the laser, transmitter/receiver optics, data acquisition electronics, and data processing software. An additional 6month Phase II-Option program is also proposed thatsupports comprehensive field measurements of large-scale currents in deep water from a ground-based platform. The final results of both programs will provide an experimentally validated evaluation of the performance capabilities of an FLV system fordeep-water, ocean applications from an airborne or shipboard platform and allow a determination of its suitability for future Phase III work.
