Research abstract

The purpose of this proposed Phase I work is to develop a prototype Photovoltaic Electronics Case for equipment which has, molded into its structure, a photovoltaic power system capable of providing electrical power to the equipment contained within the case. The system would be able to provide at least enough power to trickle charge the battery powering the equipment, or if possible, sufficient power to operate the system. The case must be rugged and able to withstand the environmental conditions common in the Special Operations environment, as well as being compact and lightweight. The Simm Associates approach consists of multiple planar photovoltaic panels embedded in the sides of a molded case. The electrical power output from each panel is conditioned so that its voltage is equal to the output voltages of the other panels. These output voltages will be controlled so that efficient battery charging can be done. Power conditioning and charge control electronics will be embedded in the case making the case a completely sealed and independent unit.
