Research abstract

RESEARCH IS PROPOSED TO DESIGN A MICROWAVE REMOTE SENSING SYSTEM TO CONDUCT AIRBORNE REMOTE SENSING MEASUREMENTS IN COASTAL AREAS UTILIZING RELATIVELY SMALL AIRCRAFT. THE SYSTEM WILL INCORPORATE AT LEAST ONE MICROWAVE RADIOMETER OPERATING AT 1.4 GHZ (L-BAND). A TRADE-OFF STUDY WILL BE DONE TO DETERMINE THE BEST WAY TO REMOTELY MEASURE SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE, WHICH IS NEEDED TO PROVIDE CORRECTIONS TO ACHIEVE ACCURATE SALINITY MEASUREMENTS. A TOTAL SYSTEM (INCLUDING COMPUTER) WILL BE SCOPED OUT, AND THE MICROWAVE RECEIVER WILL BE COMPLETELY DESIGNED, INCLUDING ENGINEERING DRAWINGS AND PRICING OF COMPONENTS. AN ANTENNA DESIGN TRADE-OFF WILL BE DONE TO DEVELOP AN ANTENNA OF LOW ENOUGH PROFILE TO EFFICIENTLY FLY ON LIGHT AIRCRAFT. A SCIENCE TEAM WILL BE FORMED TO CRITIQUE THE DESIGN.
