Research abstract

The US Marine Corps desires to reduce the weight of their Amphibious Combat Vehicle platform to increase buoyancy in water operations, increase fuel efficiency, and improve ride quality. Material changes to reduce weight can provide a secondary benefit of reducing corrosion concerns. Corvid Technologies proposes to use their experience in lightweighting other vehicle platforms, familiarity with the purpose and function of ACV subsystems, and expertise in simulation and design optimization to develop and evaluate new lightweight component designs for the ACV. Corvid will identify targets for weight reduction and will develop and score various conceptual designs to reduce weight and improve corrosion resistance. The concepts will be evaluated against structural performance criteria with Corvid’s Velodyne FEA solver and refined until performance goals are met. Conceptual designs will be scored on weight reduction, cost efficiency, performance, technical risk, and corrosion resistance and the highest performers will be combined into Corvid’s recommended solution. For Phase I, Corvid will focus on non-survivability?related systems which will be faster to qualify and integrate compared to survivability subsystems. Corvid’s goal is to reduce weight by at least 2000 lbm and not increase production cost by more than $20/lbm.
