Research abstract

A large body of work has been done based on the fundamental concepts of social cognitive development, including the need for authentic learning environments and collaboration. It is now possible to transfer the work done to date from the classroom setting to Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) and achieve significant gains in both instructional effectiveness and cost effectiveness. In particular, there is a need for intelligent performance support tools (IPSTs) to aid in the design and development of interactive, computer-aided, networked, multimedia instructional environments. The following objectives have therefore been defined for Phase I: . Define the functional requirements, in terms of narrative specifications grounded in sound pedagogical theory and research, required for CSCL design, development, and delivery. . Design, based on commercially available software and existing software tools, prototypes of IPSTs which can make a significant difference. . Develop prototypes of CSCL applications in several areas which will demonstrate the concept and provide proof of the feasibility and effectiveness of IPSTs for CSCL. . Provide a technology assessment of the concept and prototypes which will aid in decisions about further work directions and scope.
