Research abstract

Alameda Applied Sciences Corporation (AASC) proposes to develop a new class of x-ray imaging instruments based on a 2-dimensional, square-pore microchannel plate technology. This square-pore technology could lead to higher sensitivity x-ray telescopes in astronomy, wide field of view sensors for the BMDO mission and to superior anti-scatter grids to enhance contrast and resolution in mammography systems. Phase-I will demonstrate that a square-pore microchannel plate curved into a spherical shape provides focusing of x-rays and superior scatter rejection. Success will lead to a market for such grids in screen-film radiography systems and also to higher sensitivity x-ray cameras and telescopes for use in astronomy and as sensors for BMDO. In Phase-II, the prototype grids developed and tested in Phase-I will be scaled in size to produce practical anti-scatter grids for immediate use in mammography systems. Mammography requires 18x24 cm grids, operating at ~20keV x-ray energies. Larger grids, 24x30 cm and 35x40 cm are required for chest and general radiography, respectively, at higher x-ray energies of 50-100 keV. AASC aims to be the premier supplier of specialized microchannel plate grids to enhance existing x-ray instruments. Successful development of 2-dimensional anti-scatter grids could benefit VA hospitals and other facilities that use mammography and general radiography imaging systems. Such 2-dimensional grids might also have impact on space based x-ray sensors and Federally funded space programs, such as x-ray telescopes.
