Research abstract
Based on our experimental results, we propose to develop technology to remove biofilm from DUWS tubing. PTT approach is based on a combination of engineering, proprietary/safe cleaning formulation, and validated treatment protocol. This technology is capable of physically removing the biofilm from dental tubing. PTT's technology is compatible with the design of the dental unit and utilizes its facility to effect the removal of biofilm. The PTT module can be easily integrated with existing and new dental units. Our technology decreased the number of colonies per centimeter from 200,000 in untreated tubing to 280 in treated tubing when an aged biofilm was cultured according to standard procedures, SEMs reveal a complete removal of the biofilm from the dental tubing by the application of PTT technology. We should therefore meet the ADA recommended 200 CFU/ml in DUWS water. These preliminary results were independently measured by the Dental School, University of Maryland. The technology is expected to be cost effective and user friendly. PTT's technology team consists of competent staff in engineering, cleaning chemistry, dental microbiology and dentistry. PTT laboratory facilities could support several SBIR research efforts. We are working closely with the University of Maryland in developing this biofilm removal technology.
