Research abstract

55 A Novel Process to Produce Nanostructured Permanent Magnetic Materials--Nanomaterials Research Corporation, 2849 East Elvira Road, Tucson, AZ 85706-7126; (520) 294-7115 Dr. Shahid A. Pirzada, Principal Investigator Dr. Tapesh Yadav, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG03-97ER82439 Amount: $75,000 Permanent magnets are being used in a variety of research, consumer, industrial, and defense applications. Dramatic improvements in permanent magnets properties have been seen with the evolution of rare-earth materials. Advantages are seen for developing magnets with unique properties to permit applications in a variety of products at affordable costs. This project aims at demonstrating and developing a cost-effective technology to produce nanostructured magnetic materials with improved magnetic properties. During Phase I, the proof-of-concept will be demonstrated for nanostructured magnetic materials with improved magnetic properties so that bulk quantities could be produced at an affordable cost. Phase II will optimize the technology. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The project would have several potential applications in areas such as: consumer electronics, computer peripherals, acoustics, office automation, magnetic resonance image, etc. The most notable application of the proposed nanostructured magnet materials will be for spindle motors for hard-disk drive (HDD) and CD-ROM.
