Research abstract

The production of high-volume chemicals and fuels as feedstocks, from non-petroleum resources such as coal, is currently a high priority for the DOE. Another high priority is the development of better catalytic processes, including processes that use acid-base catalysts. Both priorities could be addressed by improving the production of coal-derived Fischer-Tropsch naphtha, a potential source for paraffins and alcohols, from which valuable chemicals and fuels (such as ethene, isobutane and isopentane) could be derived. This project will design and prepare improved solid acid catalysts, based on sulfated zirconia and related mixed oxide systems, for the conversion of paraffins and alcohols to higher-value products in future Fischer-Tropsch plants. The most promising processes will be chosen for scale up and further development in Phase II. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The development of more efficient and environmentally friendly catalytic processes for converting paraffins and alcohols to valuable products should help economic growth and create more jobs in America. It is expected that this industry would be concentrated in rural States, thereby providing rural communities opportunities of sustainable economic and social growth.
