Research abstract

75494-Practical methods for carbon dioxide capture and sequestration from fossil-fuel-fired electric production plants must be developed to stabilize atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. For emerging advanced gasification technologies that co-produce electricity and hydrogen, there is a need for carbon dioxide capture technologies that operate at elevated temperatures (>400¿C). This project will develop cost-effective carbon-dioxide-selective membrane devices that can operate at elevated temperatures in a gasification environment. In Phase I, the carbon-dioxide-selective membranes will be fabricated as thin supported films on inorganic supports, and will be evaluated for selectivity, flux, and stability properties. The supports will be fabricated from the same material that will be used in Phase II, when the membranes will be constructed on much larger, cost-effective supports. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The membrane technology should have application in advanced electric power generation, especially those gasification technologies that will co-produce hydrogen.
