Research abstract
Not Available The proposed Phase I program will design active noise and vibration reduction systems for the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) in order to satisfy specific performance-based objectives. Those objectives are: 1) maintain safe exposure limits for all AAAV personnel (crew and in-transit marines) while eliminating the need for any personal hearing protection as first-priority or eliminating the need for double personal hearing protection as second-priority; 2) ensure speech intelligibility levels greater than ninety percent; 3) improve reduction in low frequency interior noise for idling hatch-open versus hatch-closed condition; and 4) improve noise reduction in AAAV interior acoustic signatures for both 15 mph land-based operation and 25 knots marine operation. Realistic ANR designs are expected to provide significant local noise control zones (10-25 dB SPL) and more modest global noise control performance for certain configurations. The work plan offers a two-path approach 1) system-level design for global/local noise reductions and 2) personnel-level design for at-the-ear noise reductions. A subcontract with BBN Technologies will provide exchange of critical AAAV data. Existing FEM and analytical models will be requested from General Dynamics to facilitate the Phase I work. The Phase II program will validate all recommended local/global ANR designs and engine isolation techniques.
