Research abstract

ADVANCED CERAMICS AND INTERMETALLIC MATERIALS SUCH AS SIC, NIAL, TI-22AL-27NB, AND MOSI2 IN ULTRAFINE, SPERICAL, AND STOICHIOMETRIC PARTICLES ARE BOTH ENABLING AND ENHANCING FOR UTILIZATION IN A VARIETY OF APPLICATIONS. AN INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUE TO PRODUCE THESE MATERIALS INVOLVES VAPORIZATION, REACTION, AND EXTREMELY RAPID QUENCHING TO FORM SUBMICRON PARTICLES WITH A WIDE RANGE OF POTENTIAL COMPOSITIONS. THE SINTERABILITY OF THESE POWDERS IS BEING EVALUATED THROUGH PRESSURELESS SINTERING, AND THE PROGRAM CULMINATES WITH AN ECONOMICAL PROJECTION OF THE COST FOR THE SCALING UP FOR COMMERCIALIZATION OF EACH SYSTEM. THIS ESTABLISHES THE THE FEASIBILITY OF THE PROCESS TO PRODUCE IN-SITU SINTERABLE CERAMIC AND INTERMETALLIC PARTICLES FOR ADVANCED APPLICATIONS.
