Research abstract

THE MATERIALS REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PYROMETALLURGICAL REPROCESSING OF SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL ARE QUITE DEMANDING. IN FACT, CURRENTLY AVAILABLE MATERIALS LIMIT PYROMETALLURGICAL REPROCESSING. INNOVATIVE CERAMIC COMPOSITES OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY TO OVERCOME CURRENT MATERIALS LIMITATIONS AND PROVIDE NONREACTIVE AND NONWETTABLE CONTAINERS TO MOLTEN AND/OR VAPORIZED METALS AND SALTS FOR PYROMETALLURGICAL REPROCESSING TO 1,900 DEGREES CENTIGRADE. TWO SUCH INNOVATIVE CERAMIC COMPOSITIONS ARE ALN-BN-SIC WITH WHISKERS AND ZRO2-TIB2 WITH THE TIB2 AS PARTICLES, PLATELETS, OR WHISKERS. AN ALN-BN-SIC CERAMIC COMPOSITE HASHIGH THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY AND THERMAL SHOCK RESISTANCE; A ZRO2-TIB2 COMPOSITE IS INSULATIVE AND CAN BE DIRECTLY INDUCTION HEATED. IN PHASE I THE CERAMIC COMPOSITIONS WILL BE INVESTIGATED IN A STATISTICAL EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH AND THE OPTIMIZED CERAMIC COMPOSITES WILL BE TESTED FOR COMPATIBILITY TO 1,900 DEGREES CENTIGRADE.
