Research abstract

In this proposal, Quadrant Engineering seeks SBIR funds to investigate technologies leading to the development of a compact, low-cost multifunction radar system for use aboard an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). If successful, the proposed radar system will provide airborne early warning (AEW), ground mapping and ground motion-detection capabilities. Several novel antenna concepts will be investigated with the goal of replacing the mechanically rotated antenna used in a conventional AEW system with a compact, electronically steered array. During Phase I we will also investigate technologies to reduce the size, power consumption and cost of the entire radar system. Phase I will also include an assessment of the algorithms necessary to provide the desired functionality, as well as a study of available aircraft. In order to meet the Navy's operational needs, we will consult with naval personnel and airframe specialists familiar with potential UAVs. These consultations will be carried out early in Phase I to pin down specifications for the radar, data system and mechanical layout.
