Research abstract

SHIELD RITE proposes to utilize a finite difference, time domain model of the multilayer frequency selective surface (FSS) to examine how the bandwidth and the angular dependence of the reflection (or transmission) coefficient depend upon the number of layers and the spacing between the layers. We shall then look at the power handling capabilities of these filters by examining the electric fields at the edges of the conductors and comparing them to the breakdown fields of the dielectric spacing material. Finally, we shall constrain material types and spacings according to power handling capabilities and determine the extent to which the effectiveness of the FSS in reducing Radar Cross Section is limited by power handling requirements.
