Research abstract

The next generation of amphibious assault vehicles, the AdvancedAmphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV), will be capable of carrying 18marines at a water speed of 25 knots and a ground speed of 45mph, a significant improvement over current vehicles. However, preliminary measurements indicate the presence of extremely highnoise levels inside the vehicle cabin. This noise, potentiallyin excess of 120 dBA, will require multiple levels of individualhearing protection and make speech communication inside thevehicle nearly impossible. In Phase I, CSA Engineering examinedseveral passive and active noise suppression approaches insimulations of the AAAV cabin and disturbance environment. Twoapproaches, one passive and one active, have the most potentialfor reducing the cabin noise levels with the least weight andpower penalties. In this Phase II effort, CSA proposes thedevelopment of these two approaches through detailed design, development hardware fabrication, and a development testingprogram to the point of prototype hardware delivery. In anoption task, CSA will integrate this prototype hardware into avehicle and perform testing. Successful demonstration of noisereduction will prepare the way for a fleet-wide noise suppressionsolution.
