Research abstract
IPM Technologies, Inc. has successfully attained the objectives of Phase I research by producing a trial formulation containing a host-produced chemical that will attract adults of two species of medically important tick to a toxic attractant\acaricidematrix in laboratory bioassays. Ticks that contact the matrix become quickly intoxicated and die within 24 h.Also, IPMT has extracted a tick arrestant from host material which, when incorporated in the matrix, causes three species of ticks to remain on it once they have made contact. These three species become quickly intoxicated and die within 24 hours. The company proposes in Phase II research to (1) identify the chemical(s) responsible for arrestment, (2) maximize the formulation containing the attractant and arrestant and (3) conduct field trials to develop a novel attract and kill product for tickcontrol. Moreover, IPM Technologies, Inc. has proved the feasibility of a novel method for generation of carbon dioxide (CO2), a powerful stimulant and attractant for ticks. The company will (4) refine this technology to (5) develop a commercial tick populationsampling system, and investigate the (6) incorporation of a CO2-based attract and kill formulation or (7) a CO2-enhanced atmosphere in tick control programs.
