Research abstract

60817 In the past few decades, Fischer-Tropsch technology has emerged in the United States as a leading technology for natural gas processing. However, because roughly 60 percent of proven natural gas reserves in the world are categorized as remote or stranded gas, there is need for Fischer-Tropsch technology that can economically access remote natural gas reserves. This project will develop a novel membrane reactor for the production of hydrocarbons from hydrogen and carbon monoxide via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis with a production capacity per unit volume of reactor that is superior to current technology options. The feasibility of the membrane reactor was demonstrated in Phase I. Active Co-based catalysts were prepared, characterized, and tested in both a tubular, fixed-bed reactor and a prototype of the proposed membrane reactor. Preliminary experimental data and engineering calculations indicate that the potential production capacity per unit volume exceeded that of both fixed-bed and slurry reactors. Phase II will scale-up, develop, and optimize the novel reactor demonstrated in Phase I. An aggressive work plan to address critical technical issues related to reaction kinetics, mass transfer, heat transfer, and reactor hydrodynamics will be undertaken. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The technology should provide a novel method for converting remote natural gas to clean fuels and chemicals.
