Research abstract

50399-98-I Pulsed High Power Switch for the Next-Generation Electron-Positron Linear Collider--Triton Services, Inc., Electron Technology Div., P.O. Box 100, , Easton, PA 18044-0100; (610) 252-7331 Mr. Todd A. Clymer, Principal Investigator Mr. Stephen P. Black, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-98ER82701 Amount: $72,460 The 3300 pulsed power modulators of the International Linear Collider will each utilize a thyratron as the switching device. The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center has issued a technical specification identifying two performance requirements exceeding the capability of conventional thyratron designs. This project will develop two critical thyratron components meeting the long life and low rate of degradation requirements of the technical specification. A group of mechanical and thermodynamic problems will be solved. A working prototype will be constructed and will be life tested. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: This work will increase the probability that U.S. sources are selected to supply the sub-systems that benefit from improved thyratron reliability. The improved design will also benefit a host of industrial, scientific, medical and military pulsed power systems. _
