Research abstract
Not Available For many different reasons, people with mental retardation have. often missed out on some of life's best opportunities. Unfortunately, one such missed opportunity has been the productivity gains and personal enrichment that can result from the use of personal computers. Access to computers for individuals with mental retardation has been quite limited due to several factors. These include a lack of opportunities to physically access computers, few training opportunities when computers are available, a lack of appropriate software, and cognitive limitations in the areas of reading and computer operation. Schools, families and service agencies are moving forward to remedy the issue of limited physical access to computers, but their time available to provide computer use training remains extremely limited. A general classroom setting for teaching computer skills is inappropriate for this population due to the pace of such a class and limitations in reading and writing. Additionally, most instructional software has been developed either for adults with no cognitive limitations or specifically for children. In this project we will address one of the prerequisite needs that exists today for furthering computer use by individuals with mental retardation.- self-directed computer training and skill assessment This project will perform the necessary research and development activities to build and test a prototype of CompSkills, a multimedia software program designed specifically for self-directed training and skill assessment for individuals with mental retardation. Such a system has great potential for enhancing self-determination and reducing dependency on others in learning how to use computers.
