Research abstract
We will develop a novel type of Residual Life Indicator (RLI) for determining the remaining capacity after prolonged storage of Chemical Protective Garments (CPC). These garments, which are designed for use by troops at risk of exposure to chemical weapons, can be stored for long periods of time in sealed bags. However. if a bag leaks or is punctured, common air pollutants like fuel vapors and paint fumes can consume the protective capacity of the garment, making its use hazardous. Our RLI will be a passive device, consisting of a piece of clear plastic coated with indicator chemistry. The device will function by causing the appearance of color on the plastic side as a result of contaminant vapors displacing a carefully chosen dye from an adsorbent on the other side of the RI. The adsorbent will be chosen to accurately reflect the behavior of the protective adsorbent in the CPC. These devices will be rugged, relatively low cost, and potentially of use under conditions of actual threat exposure as well as in storage. BENEFITS: Low-cost Residual Life Indicators for chemical protective gear will provide assurance to chemical emergency response teams, including fire fighters. law enforcement personnel, industrial workers, and environmental remediation personnel, that their protective clothing is in working order on removal from storage prior to use under hazardous conditions.
