Research abstract
iPerformX develops advanced training systems to measure, assess, manage, and adapt learner performance in complex training programs like flight training. Our immersive simulators, performance management platform, and AI technologies have been used by the US Navy and Air Force to provide personalized and adaptive learning experiences, accelerating learning and saving resources while maintaining quality. In collaboration with HarmonEyes and the University of Central Florida, we integrate advanced psychological and physiological performance measurement techniques into our training systems. HarmonEyes' Predict SDK assesses various performance indicators, including comfort, endurance, attention, control, performance, training, health, and vision. This integration provides real-time, minimally invasive measurements of cognitive load and other performance-related factors, supporting actionable methods to improve user performance. Our approach integrates real-time cognitive load and performance indicator assessments into virtual training solutions representative of those used within the Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) and Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) environments. By assessing cognitive load during training scenarios, instructors can make informed decisions about student readiness and adjust training difficulty accordingly. Phase I focuses on developing a technical design to integrate Predict and monitor student performance using XR media. This is achieved through iPerformX’s MissionXR flight simulation and training environment which includes a T-6B. We develop a taxonomy of performance characteristics relevant to naval aviation and extend HarmonEyes’ technology-enabled performance enhancement methodologies to naval aviation applications. In the Phase I option period we leverage our comprehensive framework, SOCRATES, which combines an intelligent tutor with a scenario generation tool to deliver personalized lessons and real-time feedback. This system dynamically adjusts to individual skill levels, guiding students towards mastery. By immersing students in realistic scenarios and allowing instructors to introduce challenges in real-time, SOCRATES enhances the training dialogue and fosters skill development. SOCRATES is leveraged to measure student performance in training tasks in parallel with performance characteristic indicators to further enhance targeted performance optimization approaches. In Phase II, we develop a comprehensive training and intervention capability tailored to naval aviation training needs. This solution leverages mobile applications and websites to deliver customized training modules focused on enhancing performance based on measured cognitive flexibility, stress tolerance, and performance in challenging scenarios. Our Adaptive Courseware Ecosystem (ACE) will support this effort, providing an AI-driven training platform that elevates student performance through personalized learning paths.
