Research abstract

Develop new large diameter, high strength rope that meets the criteria. Identify materials and process to develop the rope. Perform tests to optimize life and robustness when used for winches, cranes or STREAM highline applications. New rope materialswould have many potential commercial applications. Commercial shipping companies are transitioning to synthetic mooring lines. Mining and crane manufacturers will also be interested in advanced rope technologies. The synthetic rope will weigh only 1/5ththat of the wire rope, be more flexible and easier to handle; fatigue life of the synthetic will be greater than that of wire; and there will be no need to apply grease or coatings to the rope to protect it from sea-water. The greater cost of alternativematerial ropes is expected to be offset by longer life.
