Research abstract

Not Available Oman Moments, Inc. will conduct a Phase 1 trade study to determine the best approach for providing both day and night imaging of ground targets from a supersonic missile. The objective is to develop a practical window system that permits both visible and IR operation in the missile's thermal environment. The key challenge is reducing the in-band IR thermal emission from the window material. This emission must not fog the image to reduce ground target image contrast below the level required for target recognition. A Baseline system will be defined for comparison of alternatives. Special phenomenology issues will be investigated, especially non-traditional band pass performance. Window materials and configurations, optical band regions, modes of protection and deployment, focal plane technology options and missile integration issues will be traded to choose a recommended approach. Phase 1 will define system parameters and specify required testing for a proposed Phase 2 program. Window system design candidates will be ranked according to the terminal Mach number at which standardized images of ground targets are discernable. To perform this study we have formed a team of experienced specialists in aerothermodynamics, optical sensing, properties of optical materials, and IR and visible phenomenonology.
