Research abstract

75533-Newer and more sensitive tools are needed to enhance neutron diffraction residual stress programs through better detector resolution, better neutron detection efficiency, and longer useful time of service. Such improved detectors would support and improve materials research in metal forming, fatigue monitoring in aircraft, protective coatings, etc. This project will assemble and prototype a neutron detector of unprecedented resolution and neutron sensitivity, based upon a far denser solid-state 10B concept that incorporates electron multiplication. Phase I will build a prototype detector, develop electronic readout mating, and test the device with electrons. Evaluation of the detector sensitivity, resolution, and lifetime under neutron diffraction conditions also will be conducted. In Phase II, additional hardware will be constructed and the device will be fully tested at a suitable SNS (Synchrotron Neutron Source) facility. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The advanced neutron-sensitive detector and electronic readout system should have applications to neutron diffraction residual stress programs leading to improved techniques and subsequent performance related to fatigue analysis, metal forming, adhesion of coating, welding technology, etc.
