Research abstract
This proposal sets forth a technical plan for determining the detail design of a highly power dense generator set, composed of High Frequency Alternator (also used as the starter) and a Power Frequency Converter. It will also discuss and recommend associated control system algorithms related to the operation of the gas turbine engine, used as the prime mover. The system design topology will cover a wide range of power outputs, from 5 kW up to 1000 kW. The alternator portion will be based on a 3-phase high speed permanent magnet starter/generator, directly coupled to engine main rotor, without the use of a gearbox. The output of the alternator is taken to a DC link module consisting of a 12 pulse rectifier system and appropriate inductors and capacitors. By utilizing Insulated Gate bipolar Transistors (IGBT), as the switching device of choice, along with unconventional switching schemes, the design of a Power Frequency Converter is discussed, which shall be capable of converting the DC link voltage to the desired AC output power, with power quality that will meet MIL-STD-704 requirements. The proposer will also make specific recommendations for optimum design options for the development of a light weight generator set.
