Research abstract
The primary objective of this program is to demonstrate conclusively that a discovery system can be used to predict materials properties by mining an existing comprehensive materials property database in an intelligent manner. A secondary objective is to develop a set of rules for the prediction of elastic moduli, thermal expansion, and enthalpy of formation of solis as part of the discovery validation effort. A literature review will be conducted of existing computational and AI-based methods for modeling and predicting materials properties and for control of materials processing. An existing commercial materials properties database from E S Microwave, TAPP, will be integrated with The Scholar's Companion and Knowbe, two computer-based discovery tools suitable for use in the analysis of materials properties. The Scholar's Companion and Knowbe will be modified to improve their discovery capabilities. This integrated set of tools, called the Materials Toolbox, will be used to discover and validate sets of rules for prediction of three martials properties of solid - elastic properties, the thermal expansion coefficient, and the enthalpy of formation.
