Research abstract
RCS Technologies, Inc. (hereafter referred to as RCS) has developed a method for producing fine grained transparent spinel ceramics (hereafter referred to as "RCS spinel") that offer significant cost savings over traditional hard optical materials. RCS spinel holds the promise of producing infrared domes and windows, as well as a wide range of commercial products, at cost savings of more thatn 50%, without a significant loss of performance (compared to sapphire). Further research in the areas of near-net-shape forming and defect characterization is necessary to realize these advantages. Federal funding will enhance and accelerate the development of RCS spinel, result in the establishment of a new company, the creation of approximately 100 jobs in the near term, and the development of a dual use technology that can significantly reduce the cost of missile systems. Anticipated Benefits: The exceptional optical and mechanical properties make RCS transparent spinel useful as domes for infrared heat seeking and video based missiels, windows for bar code scanners, lenses and windows for lasers, watch crystals, wear parts - including jewel bearings, orifices, nozzles, and piston rods, stiff windows for Field Emitting Device (FED) flat panel displays, and other commerical optics, the establishment of a start-up comapny, more than 100 new jobs over the next 5 years.
