Research abstract
A multi-disciplined approach is proposed to configure this target system using existing technology to meet the expendable cost goals and the rugged system performance requirements. A unique design is proposed which further deploys at launch to represent a larger water craft in size and radar cross section. Specifically: - The propulsion and electronics suite take advantage of the economics of scale and the environmental stress tolerance associated with recreational vehicles, i.e., Personal Watercraft (PWC). The positioning, guidance, and control are derived from GPS, and remote control techniques developed for pilotless vehicles. - The launch, additional erection/adaptability features, and recovery are based upon deployable antenna techniques. - The seaworthiness at high speeds is augmented by low cost multi-hull concepts supported by research at the Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech). - Target reflectivity background aided by stealth technology studies. The Phase I system design will include the platform and the operator control subsystems. The Phase I Option will include full scale model testing and reporting. Phase I will be reviewed with the customer and documented such that the Phase II effort will be a low risk design finalization. The prototype demonstration activity will verify that the Phase III recurring cost will be below the $15,000 target.
