Research abstract
Conventional shielding techniques for an electromagnetic pulse use high permeability magnetic materials. Such materials have limited effectiveness once they are saturated. A new approach for shielding has been identified using a layered film structure where the shielding actually increases after the magnetic film saturates. These results are based on the use of a new computer code which predicts the attenuation in a multilayer, non-linear system. This allows modeling of the shielding effectiveness for the complex case of high conductivity and high permeability layers in which the high permeability film reaches saturation. Using this computer code in combination with a multilayer film, it was found that it is possible to design a profile to increase the attenuation even at magnetic fields that saturate the magnetic layers. This is a surprising result and indicates the importance of such a code that treats nonlinear, multilayer media. This Phase I program will model and demonstrate various layered structures with the object of producing and marketing a new profiled shielding material for high magnetic fields. As part of the Phase I program, a user-friendly version of the multilayer code will also be developed and marketed. A lightweight material that shields in a high field environment can protect against an electromagnetic pulse/ In addition, a computer code is being developed which models non-linear electromagnetic attenuation and can be used for electromagnetic modeling.
