Research abstract

72755S03-I Beam position and emittance are critical parameters for accelerator applications. High-precision emittance measurement requires precise beam position at the measurement location. At present no technique exists for non-destructive, simultaneous, pulse-to-pulse beam position and emittance measurement. This project will develop a high precision, cavity-based system for simultaneous, pulse-to-pulse beam position and emittance measurements, without beam interception or moving parts. Phase I will provide a conceptual design of the resonance cavity system for simultaneous beam position and emittance measurements. The position-emittance measurement system will be analyzed for magnetic lattice and cavity-derived systematic errors to determine figures of merit for achievable beam position, beam-size, and emittance resolution. In Phase II, a prototype cavity will be fabricated, bench-tested, and tested with the beam. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The high precision, integrated position-emittance measurement technique should be applicable to all particle accelerators where maintaining beam quality is crucial, from high energy physics accelerators to medical application accelerators. The monitor also should find use in any application where precise knowledge of linac beams is required, such as in medical or industrial diagnostic accelerators, and for fault detection in welded structures.
