Research abstract

Recent military activity reflects the importance of continued technological advancements for all products within the modern soldier''s arsenal. The U.S. must continue to invest in the development of products that not only provide quicker, better, fasterresults, but they must also be more robust and dependable to withstand the extremes of day-to-day combat throughout the world. The SHOT Smart Charger for Smart Batteries Phase II proposal documents our highly successful Phase I feasibility research anddevelopment activity regarding an innovative, lightweight, compact, rapid charging, SMBusT compliant battery charger. It discusses in great detail our inventive engineering designs and methods for meeting and/or exceeding the requirements and constraintsimposed on this project. The Phase II proposal work plan shows how we will not only enhance the system, but also build, test and deliver high fidelity prototypes to the customer. Finally, it addresses our strategies for the Smart Charger commercializationduring and after the Phase II project. The commercialized Smart Charger will be capable of charging SMBus compliant batteries in single or multiple configurations from a variety of AC/DC power sources. In summary, the SHOT Smart Charger for Smart Batteriesrepresents a significant improvement over currently available battery charging hardware and technology. The effectiveness of today''s soldier is paramount to the successful execution of each and every wartime mission. Any product that can improve the stamina, reduce the stress and ultimately improve the overall performance of a soldier must be considereda valuable and necessary tool. Our revolutionary design, which reduces weight by over 70%, volume by over 90% and performs extremely well in a variety of harsh environments, is a tool each soldier will come to depend upon on a regular basis. The samebenefits enjoyed by the military will be forwarded on to the private sector as well. Our Smart Charger will have numerous commercial applications in those industries requiring a lightweight, rugged battery charger. Forestry, logging, mining, oil and gasextraction, utilities, transportation industries in air, rail, water, truck, transit, pipeline, postal and courier applications will all experience advancements in technology and thus, have the need for tailored, flexible power management tools. Productssuch as laptop computers, digital assistants, cellular phones, video games, and power tools continue to be smaller and more portable requiring manufacturers to improve battery-charging systems to meet consumer demand. The SHOT Smart Charger represents thenatural evolution in innovative charger technology.
