Research abstract

1We will develop entirely new class of electrooptic analog-to-digital (A/D) converters and modulators. Preliminary experiments on electrooptic materials have demonstrated such conversion/modulation. The A/D converter/modulator consists of an integrated optic channel waveguide with device end faces polished and coated with high reflectivity mirrors. The resultant transmission response of the device can be tuned through the electrooptic effect. Several advantages of the A/D converter/modulator are its multi-valued logical capability, electronically reconfigurable logical weights, and high speed operation (~GHz). Additional advantages include elimination of the use of sampling optical pulse, provision of long distance digital optical signal tranmission capability, high SNR, high dynamic range and thermal stability. The reconfigurable multiwavelength coding can be used to realize highly secure optical communication for military an commerical purposes.
