Research abstract

This project seeks to demonstrate the practicality of using resonant circuit techniques to excite the field of specially designed high frequency alternators for the efficient production of 60 Hz AC power. The project will also explore the practicality of controlling the resonant excitation so that the device power output can be synchronized with and n coupled to an existing power grid. Tests will be conducted on the core of a device designed for a nominal 120 VAC 2kVA output. The feasibility of scaling to higher output devices will be investigated. Production of 60 Hz AC power directly from high frequency alternators should lead to smaller, lighter, more efficient, less costly sources of AC power ideally suited to vehicles and field operations. Output frequency independence from engine speed allows engine operation at maximum efficiency, improving fuel consumption and flexibility.
