Research abstract

The Mendez R&D Associates (MR&DA) have been exploring optical code division multiple access (CDMA) techniques to enhance the performance of Gigabit fiber optic networks. We have identified matrix CDMA techniques as particularly valuable from the view-point of network density and network throughput. The implementation of optical matrix CDMA codes depends on fiber optic time delays. Independently, silica based, lithographic techinques have been explored for advanced switchable radar time delays. Further, wavelength division multiple access (WDM) devices have been developed for ultradensity, Gigabit switchable networks. The innovation on this Project is that we propose a merger of these three distinct technologies, each with their own degree of maturity and sophistication, to produce an affordable, scalable, flexible, network concept with various applications ranging from the DoD to Factory Floor to Information Highway. On this Project we are incorporating the efforts and technology of a WDM developer (the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, JPL), is a silica based time delay developer (the Hughes Research Laboratories), a University researcher (USC, optical CDMA codes), as well as the MR&DA (system concept, implementation, integration, and test). This approach will yield versatile ultradense, switchable, Gigabit networks with a minor investment in device technology. Anticipated Benefits: Optical Backplane bus for Commercial and DoD processors and computers -- high performance (data rate/density/throughput) router -- fiber optic interconnect for High Performance Computers -- advanced local area network -- protocol transparent switch -- scalable interconnect switch
