Research abstract

40834 November 13, 1996 Duly Research This project will design an ultra-high frequency planar accelerating structure (PAS) for future linear colliders which has distinct advantages over conventional, cylindrical structures. Phase I will study the physics and engineering issues of the PAS section, including the heat loads at high accelerating gradients, as well as static and dynamic RF properties of the structure. A tradeoff study will be performed in order to select an optimum frequency at an accelerating gradient of 150-300 MV/m. Numeric simulations and analytical calculations, including development of a diffraction model and a mode matching code, will be used to evaluate the electromagnetic fields of' the PAS. Methods of detuning the planar structure will be investigated to reduce long-range wakefields for multibunch acceleration. Finally, a sealed, X-band model of a specifically designed PAS cell will be built and tested Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: For the high energies and luminosities of future linear colliders, the conjunction of planar accelerating structure (PAS) and ultra-high operating frequency offers significant fabrication, performance and compactness advantages over conventional structures. A new generation of compact high-frequency linear accelerators offers benefits in industrial and medical applications, as well as in particle physics research.
