Research abstract

The focus of this research is on designing an instructional environment for aiding the acquisition of concepts involving dynamic spatial reasoning needed for air combat maneuvering (ACM). The key ACM concepts involve movement in time and space, which are difficult to communicate in lectures, print media or conventional CAI incorporating text and static graphics. CHI Systems proposes to combine intelligent instructional sequencing with state-of-the-art three-dimensional visualization techniques to create an Electronically-Assisted Ground-based Learning Environment (EAGLE). EAGLE will be designed based on COTS and GOTS technology. It is intended to aid in bridging the gap that currently exists between classroom preparation and subsequent simulator and aircraft training by aiding concept acquisition and improving transfer of this knowledge into skilled aircraft performance. The proposed Phase I effort will culminate in a prototype demonstration of EAGLE look and feel, presenting ACM concept visualizations and an example of concept application training within a specific problem scenario.
