Research abstract

The proposed research will determine the feasibility of developing a Hyperspectral InfraRed Imager (HIRI). This imager will be used to collect spatial and spectral data from ground based and airborne perspectives, which will then be used in conjunction with a computer based target identification process. The long term goal is to identify the targets of interest in real time using an automated recognition algorithm on the data as it is collected, and convey this information to a pilot or a weapons control system. The sensor system proposed is based upon an imaging grating spectrometer, and uses recent developments in two dimensional IR detector arrays and a cold linear variable filter (LVF) to maximize performance. The system would operate in the 3 to 5 um region, providing day or night operating capability. The proposed effort will also investigate the feasibility of extending the spectral range of this instrument to include the 1-3 um and 8-13 um regions. The LVF is an innovative approach to achieve high coherence performance without the bulk and complexity of cooling the entire spectrometer. The compact design will allow the instrument to collect data from a tower or from and airborne platform.
